I did however also check to see if passing hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false
would work and it did.

You are absolutely correct, the solution was listed in those references and
your instructions. Forgive me for not researching it enough online, I'll
make sure I check more thoroughly before reporting a possible bug next time.
