I had some time this mornining to go back and do the install from scratch.
My intention was to get a log after the "failure", as you requested.
At the moment, I'm in the midst of installing the base system from the CD,
after installing the kernel and drivers from the CD. It did not lock up.

from the CD, then the Base Install fails to mount the CD because it has
been left mounted by the previous process. Moving to VC-2, I could not
