oh, i almost forgot,
there's one issue i neglected to mention:
the sound card doesn't seem to be detected/supported. previously it was
a cs46xx audio card which afaicr worked fine before installation, though
it's possible i had placed some extra modprobe options long ago and
forgotten about them

it'd be super-cool if the installer had built in support for creating
some kind of config image with pre-seeded debconf answers et c. which
could then be used to generate a "config floppy" or kickstart
