At least if you boot with 'expert' you should IMHO be able to tweak
that value.

it would be very nice to put the GRUB password into /boot/grub/menu.lst
in MD5-hashed form, instead of plain-text.
I.e., add
password --md5 $1$abcdef...
instead of
password foo
