Ooops sorry premature whinging.
A straight Etch install seems to be working fine now.
I think it was fixed by a BIOS upgrade (1.7 to 1.13).

I recently rebuilt a dual 933Mhz P3 machine from a slightly unstable
Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7 mobo to a hopefully better Intel STL2. After the
switch the machine (up to date Etch, 2.6.18-686 kernel) wouldn't
complete the boot sequence... it would hang up with a "hda: interrupt
lost" message.

I just tried to use a software raid device as '/', but soon after
selecting the partitioner's "Finish partitioning and write changes to
disk" a dialog says:
"Debian does not currently support using software raid for the root
filesystem or /boot partition. A system installed in this way will not

The machine (dual 933MHz P3) has had no problems with a couple of beta4
installs on it in the past (but only with one 40GB drive and trivial
partitioning... this is my fist attempt at raid/lvm)

Just reinstalled using the beta3 sarge-i386-netinst.iso on the machine
and it now seems to have no problems pinging anything or downloading
from the repository.
So please mark this one closed.

Got to the point where it's ready to retrieve packages
via http or ftp and it became apparent that the machine's
ethernet connection was not up. (Had used same manual IP address
configuration to 192.168.7.4 which the machine has always used
