Since I managed to work around the problem first time around and am a
happy debian user now, I don't have an empty computer handy to test the
new installer.

An update on my installation story:
The system is running. But I encountered 2 other issues.
1) Just after pre-configuring all the packages and before the
installation started, one of the programs complained that it could not
find /usr/lib/python2.3/compileall.py. Lucky enough I still had a cop
