Problems with Passwords

I have just installed Debian 3.1 on a desktop PC that is not connected to the Internet. When I try to login, it allows me to enter my user name, but oddly enough, there is absolutely no way I can enter my password. Was there a mistake I made in the installation? And how do I fix the password is
