At the end of the installation process, a new "custom boot floppy" is
made that mounts the newly-installed root filesystem. This disk is
first formatted (apparently by superformat) with interleave 1.

I seem to have been looking at the wrong kernel-config file; on
double-checking, I find that the "compact" flavor has only SERIAL and
SERIAL_CONSOLE, but *not* SERIAL_NONSTANDARD -- which sounds like what I
need.
I'll try installing the "vanilla" flavor, and see if that solves the
problem.
a few multi-megabyte kernel packages, but not otherwise
available. And, without having the installation finished, I'm not sure I could
extract the module from a *.deb package anyway.
Without getting the modem running, I can't proceed with the installation. Any
suggestions?
