This problem also exists on the standard amd64 ISO. I attempted to
install the 386 version and had no issues. I'm waiting for a fix too.

Until that issue is fixed here is a temporary workaround:
* When the graphical installer asks "Configure the package manager" > "Use
a network mirror?" select "No", this will install Gnome from the CD.

I have tried wheezy, jessie and sid, manually patching initrd.gz (with the
