Hi everybody,
the issue disappeared, after using a newer qemu.
qemu version causing kernel freeze: Etch package quemu 0.8.2-4etch1
qemu version running just fine: qemu-0.9.1 compiled from source
It is the first time that I saw the Etch qemu package with problems.
