I know C pretty well (it's my best computer language), and the patch
looks good to me. The only change I would make (and this is a minor
nit) is to cache the result of strlen by putting it into a const size_t
variable, which may improve the compiler's optimizations

it gets following error

This bug also affects i386, but only the package for amd64 was pushed to
etch-proposed-updates. I think that you should also push a package for
i386.
