I am a potential Debian developer as well ... but which obstacles have to be
overcome for this (besides technical qualification which I hope is not a
problem)?

more people benefit from that. How is it possible to let

Could you have a look with hdparm if the unmaskirq flag is set for your
harddisk/cdrom? If not, this could be the cause because it might be that
timer interrupts are lost during disk transfers. You can try to set the flag
then and see if it helps.

hing that made a difference was FastFPE.
Maybe it is because it is written in perl (or something else?) and uses
floating point numbers generally, even if they are not needed. But on
virtually any other processor you do not notice that.

Sometimes it starts. This behaviour can also be caused by general stability
problems of your system (memory timing, power supply) or a bug in a kernel

It seems that this is a problem with kernel 2.4.27-bast. I just created a bug
report (Bug#274517). I was, however, able to do a network install using
kernel and initrd from:
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-arm/rc1/images/bast/netboot/

The quoted instructions are from FPA/FPE. Unfortunately I do not know a good
source of information about it. I usually used the ARM7500FE documentation,
but it seems that it is not available at www.arm.com anymore. I could email
it on request.

I would suggest to use a 2.6 kernel. On my RiscPC, 2.6.0-rmk2 together with
all the patches I submitted to rmk's patch sy

ader in d-i, just a kernel and an initrd image. So I took the
one from b-f. But maybe they just did not know about the new linloader?
How do I get the linloader source from CVS?

Maybe I will habe a look at the linloader source later.

I started the kernel via linloader:
linloader initrd= root=/dev/ram
It said (after the usual stuff):
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 1:00
How are the kernel and the initrd to be used? What am I doing wrong? Does the
kernel maybe lack initrd support?
