It's probably still in the morgue on auric. But I'd rather someone figured
out what's wrong with X 4.0.3 so that we can fix it.

4.0.3 failed, in the same way as you're describing. So I think 4.0.3 is
just broken on ARM. :-(

I've been trying to get X4 going with fbdev and it's not working still.
I thought someone may have had problems with this before.
The machine is a old Netwinder DM. I installed Debian unstable, upgraded
Perl ot 5.6 and all packages along with that, and got xserver-xfree86
