I managed to fix this problem by copying the contents of the weirdly
named ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/default/xx.slt/ folder into
~/.mozilla-thunderbird/default.knt/
This worked fine for me, not sure if it could cause problems (probably a
good idea to backup the default.knt folder).
