Ok, that's cautiously promising.
The next suggestion is maybe a bit annoying: try undoing or commenting-out
the language selection and checking whether the previous error-prone
behaviour returns.
I haven't been able to figure out why choosing a language in the config
file would make a difference

That appears to be a
Glenn,
Send us the output of
lspci -k
As root do
alsactl store
and send us the contents of
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state
This should show all the known audio controls.

Well it's hardly a netbook.
It has 4 USB ports, an HDMI port, two audio jacks, an Ethernet port, an SD
slot, and an IR port.
I've changed a couple HDs on it already.
It's a 64 bit desktop, they are designed to be mounted to the back of a
monitor, if one wishes to do that.
It will be a nice addition
If the computer is a netbook, you're better off replacing the computer and
trashing the existing computer after data recovery operations. Netbooks
rely mostly on software and have limited parts inside and where I

Yeah, I don't know how easy it would be to change the motherboard, the
computer is small, about the size of a double sandwich.
I put in my own RAM and HD, that part is easy, but I don't know if it is a
simple process on one of these to disconnect the peripheral plugs from the
motherboard.

Ok. I'm not sure what to suggest in terms of build changes, so I'm
wondering about other command-line options before learning more about the
build.
Does the problem occur when using different voices and languages?

Hello James,
Thanks for this. It does not print any information when speaking stops. It
does print that it received the hangup signal, which is what I sent to kill the
process.
What shall we add to a build to gain more insight?
Thank you,
