With regard to accessibility Debian has Mate as the default DE. By default, this installs Debian desktop and Mate.

Hi, Orca comes up at the login screen ok and I am able to login just fine but once I am logd in speech does not start up. I am using mate as I did the normal selections in the latest alpha testing installer but my home partition is on another directory is on another partition from the operatin

Hi, The Debian accessibility team considers that Mate is the most accessible and installs this by default. Because sobric, simple, with menus, customizations, flexible, and easy to understand in its design. Gnome3 works technically, even if there are often regressions (recently there were).
