Trying to select some mailboxes in my mail client using IMAP produces
errors.
The logs on the server contain:

It seems that the problem is related to msg flags.
I tried setting the entire mailbox to "seen" and now I can access it.
I spoke too soon. I was able to access it and delete a few msgs, now
I'm getting the same error as originally. :-(

Is there a reason that mail marked as deleted is included in the total maxmail
limit a user can have in their mailboxes? I would think that when you check
if a user is at the limit for how much mail they can have, that you would
exclude mail marked for deletion from that total. I am wondering

I think that what Bret is saying (from a technical aspect)
is that the quotacheck shouldn't count messages with a status
of "002" because this means they're deleted.
