orth, I am also running darktable on a dual-monitor
setup with a GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB and have no problems at all. Mind
you, I did tweak the darktablerc to increase opencl_memory_headroom to
500, so that may help David as well.

That said, there may be other reasons to limit the line lengths of code,
as you indicate. I have no personal stake in this matter with regards to
Darktable beyond a bit of myth busting.
