That was the solution!! I had in fact an old version of cygwin1.dll in
/usr/sbin which I use to start inetd by a registry entry.

Well, I'd say the usual debugging techniques apply. But it's apparently
a bug in Cygwin so it's a case for Cygwin debugging rather than rlogin
debugging.
