I'm rebuilding any way for XP home.

Dead and gone.
Cygwin is back in its proper place, so I won't put the tools under the DOS
prompt any more.

just use arithmetic expansion

I got fed up going to Start-Run-Calc, and just typed calc from my CygWin prompt and up

course I've got system32 in my $path
