Cygwin inoperable immediately following install

Hi: I just tried to install Cygwin on an HP Pavilion running Windows XP Media Center Edition (which I think is only different in having a some media programs preloaded). After I installed Cygwin I tried to run (in this order) the cygwin.bat batch file, ash.exe, bash.exe, and Run.exe. None opened;
