Thank you, Tatsuro Matsuoka, Following Brian Dessent's advice, I have reinstalled Cygwin in binary (Unix) file mode. Under that rendition of Cygwin, the gcc 4.3.2 build ran to completion. The resulting GCC looks promising, although I have not yet tested it extensively. Best, Werner P.S
