error in the list archives
I did find that modifying and using the Mandrake /etc/DIR_COLORS file
as follows:
cp /etc/DIR_COLORS ~/.DIR_COLORS
dircolors -b ~/.DIR_COLORS
works just fine

Thanks, neomjp! That gave me the information I needed to unwind the various
problems. I just basically started over, made sure that any old rubies were
out of the way and started fresh on 1.9.2-head with wound up working just
fine.

problem, simply define the HOME variable BEFORE you
attempt to setup cygwin, pointing it to something less restricted (such as
c:/home/) and everything works just fine.

cygwin.elite-systems.org, into a Vista Home Premium system (I know - ugh!)
