This (original email below) turned out to be a general cygwin issue, not
a gawk issue:
$ LC_ALL=C sed 's/x/y/' $(seq 100)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Dear Cygwin folks,
As shown in this run of PDL (Perl Data Language)’s CI, our new use of tgmath.h
is causing a problem with log10:

Cygwin 3.3.1
includes, and was unsuccessful. The best I could see was that the Choco package
seems to also include “[Cygwin] 11 install gcc-core 11.2.0-1”.

one of it's dependencies is libGL1-7.10.1-2.
I can dowload the package from different mirors, but the package causes the
setup.exe to hang during install.

I have done some testing and it looks like I get an error on any string literal
which contains non-ascii chars. Is there some flag needed to get gcc to accept
non-ascii chars?

I run scans frequently and have never had this show up before I want to
believe that this is a false positive, but want to be sure...

There shouldn't be any (newline) processing. It makes no sense to
cripple Cygwin only because Notepad doesn't support newlines without the
carriage return.

large number as well. I don't know if this is important.
I've had XEmacs drop into the defunct state according to ps but I
haven't see any other error messages.
