(openDX), but it was ineffective. After upgrading my 6-month-old cygwin version to the latest one (with Xorg instead of Xfree) that switch actually works; I have no trouble allocating half my total RAM. So, I guess we'll never no exactly where the problem was, but I'm happy now.
