Is there some reason why you request GPU time using Google Colab? Do you
have any objections to contributions from other sources? I have a GTX
1080Ti that can do a pretty good job as well :)

Yes, using your own GPU is best. But recently I have found Colab and it is so
easy.
Maybe on this ML, there is many people who don't have GPU. Colab is nice
service for them.
