Stus-List 1988 or 1989 C&C 37+/40 with atypical Ports, what gives?

We're in the market for a new boat, and came upon a 37+ with opening ports, rather than the slender racked ports. I've never seen one like this in any brochures or pics. Do you think this was a prototype or just a custom job by the prior owner? ___ This
