Strange. Heard repetitive tapping sound while on the boat this week. The
source was a woodpecker attacking the furled genoa on a neighboring boat.
Must have been bugs in the sail. Link to picture:

Woodpeckers will also drum when seeking a mate. I've seen one rap on an
aluminum ladder, no bugs on it. Very loud.

They drum to mark their territory, as well. I have seen (and heard) them
drumming on the telephone poles (esp. the top metal cap) and on our
eavestroughs.

Wait until an osprey couple moves in – they make an enormous mess very quickly!

I had a tougher time when the ospreys left and the cormorants moved in. Yes,
the osprey can turn your boat into a sushi bar garbage bin with fishbones and
guts scattered everywhere, but the cormorants seem to be able to spray bird poo
all over the boat even better than a commercial painting out
Woodpeckers are territorial and use the tapping to claim their territory
IIRC. You can read horror stories of people having woodpeckers going at
their metal roof, gutters, etc. They can be difficult to persuade to
leave.

I wish somebody would make a bombproof solar day/night vent. I get about
4-6 years out of the Nicro day/night vents. At $180 a pop that can add up.
However, I don't replace them anymore. If replacing the battery doesn't
work, it's usually the motor. I keep a spare with a replacement motor.

it is...I replaced the rechargeable battery maybe 6 years agoit
doesn't look as pretty as yours...mine has a white plastic frame.

Mine is a newer gen 3” model. 5 years old maybe, and I’d not buy another.
I’ve tried my best to upgrade/repair/modify WINDSTAR in ways that are top
notch, robust and reliable, and this product definitely isn’t. It still works
but the slide-switch is intermittent - the cheapest junk availa
Just to add to it, a duck layed an egg in our cockpit (no nesting material at
all) - we just found a fresh egg one day going for a sail. Thankfully, no
cleanup was needed.
I guess you never know what you can find...

Agreed. Another annoying aspect of the new model is the space between the unit
and mounting surface for a genny sheet to catch on. If they get any taller
I’ll need to put police tape around them. Maybe they didn’t know the vents
would be used on sailboats.
