The boat w just bought came with a rally Tasker head sail. Although the
material felt crisp the leech was complete shredded.
It came with a dacron sun cover and that was shredded, the sail was shredded,
there were numerous repairs evident. At guest I thought the all had been left

The last two times I have bought headsails for Penniless, the sailmakers
have suggested dacron. It slowly degrades over time and can be re-cut. My
previous high-tech sails had collapsed suddenly (two out of four headsails
over 20+ years). I went with a local sailmaker who specializes in dacron for

Any chance there was more or less rain or tributary flow? Boatzincs.Com
provides guidance for the use of aluminum, zinc and magnesium anodes based
on protected metals and salinity. If the water became more or less
saltymaybe??

We are at the end of the Thames River where it enters Long Island Sound, but
there is no current and it is pretty much salt water as far as I can tell. We
had so little rain last summer that I can’t imagine it was lower salinity that

Can you imagine being a spectator boat on the edge and having one of the
maxis sail right up to you and tack? Wow!

The camp x-4 zincs have a little copper ball in them that contacts the
shaft. Any chance that they were making better or worse contact between
different years? The yard guys wack the hell out of them while alternately
tightening the screws in a torque pattern. Use a wire brush to clean and

Hi Dennis,
Having done a few of these, I can assure you that it's a wild ride most
years. It's just that some are far worse. There's a lot of emphasis on
how bad 1998 was (six sailors died) but, frankly, I think 1984 was worse.
The really bad years come around about every seven years. Sometimes
David,
I'm at the other end of Long Island Sound, and I too noticed an
unusually rapid deterioration of my shaft zinc. Usually it's only 1/2
gone over the whole season, but this year I could see it going much
faster over the summer and it was totally gone, as is not there, when I
was hauled
Just got an update - there are now 15 retirements.

This time, as I see it, it hasn't been too bad though clearly
uncomfortable. Wild Oats XI lost her main in 40 knots of wind. It's been
much, much worse. In the 1984 race, 104 retired out of 150 starters. THAT
was brutal. We got knocked down three times.
