Hello all
With all of the discussions about hydraulic backstay adjusters, and mine
being fixed (finally), where do most of you keep and use the pressure? At
the dock vs. sailing and under what conditions?
Thanks!

regard folks have for Lew Townsend's work.
I wanted to use him to repair mine a couple years ago. Contacted him but
he was just about to start a 3 week vacation

ject: Stus-List Hydraulic Backstay - Best Fluid?
Listers,
What is the best fluid to use in my Navtec Hydraulic Backstay?
I see lots of chatter about viscosity and moisture inhibitors, but no real
definitive answer.
Anyone have a recommendation?
All the best,
This is from the Navtec/Lewmar website:
What kind of oil do I need for my Integral backstay adjuster, hydraulic
panel, or hydraulic cylinder?
Hydraulic oils used with Navtec equipment should be premium petroleum
based, antiwear oils that have anti-foam and anticorrosion additives. They
should ha
Mine had transmission fluid originally, but the hydraulic ram service company
advised me to switch it out and use a non-detergent 10 weight oil. Works
great, thirteen years now. Bought it at NAPA. I would use that again.

If a local hydraulic shop can't fix it, I second the recommendation for Lew
Townsend in Seattle.
When you get it back, get a rubber washer for $1 or so at a big box or
hardware store and slide it down the shaft to rest on top of the cylinder.
It will protect the upper seal from UV, a cmmon failure

Shawn,
FWIW, I got a quote from a Navtec certified rigger to rebuild my Navtec -10 for
$800. Instead I took the ram and the remote pump to a local hydraulic

Hello all,
It appears that the backstay adjuster is in need of a rebuild. Although the
gauge reads to 2500psi, it struggles to reach 500, and slowly bleeds down.
It is marked Hydra Tech Marine, Vancouver, BC. (which appears to be out of
business), and looks like this:

Lew Townsend did my hydraulics. He is very professional, and he does a lot
more than just replacing parts. I am sure you will not find better quality
work from anyone than you will get from him.

You could source new seals on McMaster-Carr which will probably be the
cheapest route.
A hydraulic shop will probably have the seals on hand and be able to
install at their hourly rate - second cheapest.

Dan- I have Sailtec backstay that is completely self contained.
The factory told me to bring it inside in the winter and store it vertically.
Something to consider once yours is repaired.
Will do- thanks guys, I'm glad it's only a regular maintenance thing :)
