Just went through the same problem this year (it started last fall)> It turned out to be the 2 clamps on the line from the racor to the engine had loosened up a bit and the line was slowly leaking. There wasn't enough room to see that area very well so I bought a good size mirror to inspect the

Edd, If the engine runs and your tank is below the engine its likely not on the suction/inlet side of the engine mounted fuel pump. I seem to recall you have a 3GM Yanmar? Last year the aft injector supply nut slacked up and did the same thing to me. It is hard to see because the air silencer

Edd, Look for the white sheets/pads that only absorb oil. They actually do absorb water but only retain oil. You can actually wring out the water without losing the oil. I put those on top of some dry-deck panels. That way any water that has to move through the engine well won't soak the pads.

Edd: I don't know the exact configuration of your engine, but suggest checking for a leak in the fuel return line which returns excess fuel from the injectors to either the tank or the input of the fuel pump or injector pump. That line frequently is a simple rubber hose and often overlooked whe

Well, I think you've eliminated a leak in the tank if you only get the smell after you run the engine. I would get a wad of paper towel and run it over the fuel system and frequently check for pink diesel (don't use pink paper towel). Obviously, the fuel will run down to the lowest point, but
