My vote is to leave the compass on the pedestal. These things can handle the
cold. When I bought our boat in 2002, the compass had a bubble, so I took to a
guy who replaced the fluid and seals. He said removing the compass was not

Been sailing 35+ years, 3 different boats. Sailed in NB, NS and ON. I have
never removed a compass.
