Doug — as far as I know, the ultrasonic speed sensors need to be through-hull, as they work by detecting particles in the water and using Doppler shift to gauge the speed. So they wouldn’t work in-hull. — Fred Fred Street -- Minneapolis S/V Oceanis (1979 C&C Landfall 38) -- Bayfield, WI > On

: Stus-List padwheel analogue thru hull device I have an Airmar ultrasonic speed sensor.  It accurately gives speed readings through water to 0.1 knots.  GPS gives speed over ground and isn't as responsive as sensor.  Ron RicciPatriot On Fri, Sep 14, 2018, 1:09 PM James Bibb via CnC-List

Hi Dan I believe most current model speed instruments measure boat speed thru the water using paddle wheels. I know Raymarine does. The Raymarine i50/i60 tri pack that we purchased in 2014 uses a paddlewheel transducer for speed. As others have said Boat Speed is very important for sail trim.

Good question. I believe that it measures speed of the boat instead of speed over ground which is helpful when you are trying to judge movement and sail trim versus how fast the tide could be moving the boat. I know there are other sensors now that measure without the paddle. > On Sep 14
