And yet again I’ll +1 to Dennis’ recommendations. I’m sitting here in my shed looking at the second set of Patagonia foul-weather gear that I purchased way back in the early 80’s. For it’s day it was pretty good stuff. FWIW, I met Yvonne Chouinard while he was still hammering out pitons... I re

More random thoughts on foulies. In spite of the rambling prose, hopefully you'll find a few nuggets in here. I like the technical gear. As a 40+ year snowsports and outdoor enthusiast, I've always valued comfort over economy. I bought Gore-Tex and fleece gear when it first came out. There's a

Adam, there is nothing like good foul weather gear if you've suffered through the cheap ones. After years of using cheap foulies, they don't call them WetSkins for nothing, I bought a set of Gill GoreTex coastal gear from their clearance centre in the USA. What a difference, 6+ hours in the rain

Rob, I am old enough to remember how it was sailing in the old "oilskins" and "sou’wester". I did a few off-shore passages in October in the Baltic Sea (+1 °C - +10 °C) and I now only wish that we had the technical gear that you can use now. It could have been cheap (it was), but it was lousy. It

All the majors make similar decent foulies. They all fall apart after several years left on a boat in hot weather. My opinions: I have two conflicting opinions. Opinion 1: If you are going to take them off the boat after each use, then don't buy LESS than you need. That is, if you are primaril

My go-to foulies are Henri-Lloyd. Bought them maybe 10 years ago. Had used Columbia Titanium rain gear bought cheaply at a Columbia outlet store near my folks' home from sometime in the 90s until I bought the Henri-Lloyd stuff when I started sailing offshore. After several years - maybe 7 or 8 - t

Adam, I've had a Helly Hansen inshore coat for the past 12 years since Helly Hansen guarantees their gear waterproof for the life of the garment. It has been replaced once under warrantee but I only paid freight for the new one (which was also a newer model). It isn't necessarily warm, but is loo

I'm happy with my Helly Hansen gear. I sail all year round, and in the ocean. The jacket is fleece lined and you can buy a separate fleece sweater that zips in for additional warmth. You can also use the fleece sweater by itself. I've had this outfit for more than ten years. Alan Bergen 35 Mk
