To clarify:
1. exhaust smoke looks just fine, as does the amount of water splooshing out
2. The powdery/rubbery stuff was only in the bilge.
3. We actually dove on the boat, so no fouling of prop and no excessive
marine growth to account for the slowness.
4. The alternator and water pump belts were
k ok to my amateur eyes. However, we do
have powdery rubber-smelling material in the bilge.
The questions:
1. Bad alternator?
2. New filters etc would be helpful?
3. New engine mounts needed?
4. Anything else that we might be missing before I can a mechanic?

What's the price of amsteeel versus wire? I got a quote of about $1200 for
steel a while back.
Also, if you use amsteel, how to you protect from chafing when it goes
through the stanchion? On my stanchions, at least, the edges of the holes
look rather rough.
