I sent a cheque that paid for the files plus an additional amount to cover
shipping (as I live 2000 km away from South Shore Yachts). Once the cheque
cleared he shipped them in one quite heavy file box, via FedEx.

Ken, thank I will follow up on this and let the group know. How did you get
the files? Did you have to go get them? thanks

Mine doesn't start turning once it is feathered but it is quite difficult
to get it out of reverse once it is shifted there with the engine off, so
we leave it in reverse. With the prop feathered there is no turning force
so no damage is reasonably possible.

I have always found in most boat that just putting it in reverse (engine off,
of course) will lock the shaft enough for the prop to feather, and then put in
neutral. I don’t think they go back to rotating after feathering.

Hi Richard,
I didn't ask but they may have some more files if they found the ones they
sold me. My guess is they are stored somewhere where it is inconvenient to
go looking through them, to find just one, so they don't bother, but that
is just a guess. I assume as I was willing to take a bunch at
Actually, for our Yanmar 3JH2E, the mfr specifically states it should be left
in forward, while other transmissions should be put in reverse. I am unaware
of any mfr that specifies leaving it in neutral.Sent from my Verizon, Samsung

Maybe this is a reason why Hurth says that you should not leave it in reverse
(or in forward). The transmission should be always in neutral. There was even a
bulletin saying that if you leave it in reverse, the warranty would be voided.
Of course, none of our boats have any warranty (:-)

Ken, that is a great find: a couple of years ago I was told that Southshore
had destroyed all of the build files; did you get a sense that they may still
have files other than the 37/40s you bought?

We also put our boat in reverse to stop the prop spinning while sailing.
It is a feathering prop but it doesn't always feather and stop unless we do
put it in reverse. This is usually some time after we shut the engine down
and then notice a slight vibration from the spinning prop.

Fred,
I replaced the throttle and shift cables on my C&C 44 in 2016 after the
shift cable broke.
The Edson information I received with the boat suggested that I needed a 64
series (5/16" ends) gear shift cable and a 33 series throttle cable.(10-32
ends).
I couldn't get Teleflex 64 series stuff so
Southshore still had some of the files last year, probably buried in deep
storage somewhere. I asked him to dig out all he could find for the C&C
37/40 series and he found quite a few (almost 40 of them) and sold them to
me.
For anyone who has a 37/40 (or a 40' from 1993 to 1995) and is intereste
Dan, I’ll let you know where and how when pull the old one.
May be awhile as cold and snowing.
Another question. My broken cable is self inflicted. While sailing in
heavy winds I tried to tried to shift from reverse to neutral. Because it
did not want to shift, I applied a lot of pressure. That
Might as well change the throttle cable too.not a hard task, but, as long
as you have to dissemble the binnacle...These may be original cables...I did it
on my LF38. The cables ran up thru the ss binnacle supports. Good

Just looked and the build file is for Hull #70 not #71. It was
delivered to Associated Yachts in Essex, Connecticut for a Dr. Pepkowitz
in July 1971. Order date was April 1971.

Speaking of build files, if anyone knows who has C&C 35-1 Hull number
71, I have the build file for it. I tried to get the build file for our
Redwing 35 (Hull #7) way back when and was sent hull #71 instead. If
anyone wants it, let me know.
I wish the build files were still available from So
If either of you have the Factory build file the cable length is usually
specified in the parts checklist (the computer printout).

Hi Patrick,
Interesting problem here. Thinking a little
outside the box... okay, maybe more than a little.
Anyone given thought to using the autopilot drive
to drive the cable instead of the tiller arm?
Zero mods required to the existing quadrant assembly.

Hi Fred,
This is a weird co-incidence... I recently melted mine by accident against
the exhaust pipe on my espar furnace. Melted the cable housing fusing it to
the cable and making it pretty much useless. Please let me know where you
source the new cable from and I'll order one too! For length, it
