Web based might be ok, but SWAT isn't much better than webmin in terms of
being intuitive, and um.. "productive" for windows users. They don't really
want to learn the ins and outs of Samba just to manage users - especially
large volumes of users :)

As Szemir asked, post the output to /var/log/messages when you start
smbd. I sometimes like to clear the log file first ... echo new > /var
log messages ... then restart the service, just to clear the cruft.

This way it does not matter what disk fails, and can even serve files
before the dead disk is replaced. (bit slow, but still works)
