I was letting Linux automount that was why I am having problems. When
Linux automounts it takes ownership of the files; when I put the entry
in fstab and mount it myself I will have ownership of the files. It
makes it easier to work with. I am having trouble figuring out what
options to use for fst

I have never worked with that distro or heard of it. Ubuntu/Mint is also based
on Debian, so I suspect the mount options are the same. The options Mint uses
for automount seem to work for me:
/media/wgking/ZENSTONE type vfat
