If you are asking an opinion pole, I think some sort of Ubunto would tend to win? I personally like Debian Stable 7.1.0 on my machines, and use Virtualbox om my workstation for trying out Debian Testing and other distributions. Also I use Virtualbox to try some new programs that still have problem

I still like Ubuntu as a base (all the things I loved about Debian with a little bit more to make life easier). I am not a fan of Unity or Gnome 3. These days I flip back and forth between KDE and XFCE on top of Ubuntu 13.04. As always GPU drivers remain problematic (I am back to nVidia with prop

Fedora is good if your laptop has UEFI and you want to dual-boot with Windows. They did a rewrite of the installer for Fedora 18 so that now you have a huge feeling of accomplishment when you actually get the OS installed, like in the Red Hat 3 days. In Fedora 19 the installer was subtly improved
