I am a novice at this...is there a way to disable virus signatures
that are generating several false positives?
Also, how do you read the virus definition database.

You can use sigtool (sigtool --help) to look into virus definitions files.

Yes, please search the archives on how to whitelist sigs or look into
signatures.pdf

You can inflate the signature archives with sigtool, find the
signature you want to delete and remove it from the relevant file.
