while running configure I get this in config.log

configure:22651: WARNING: 7.15.0 is too old. Need version 7.10.0 or higher.

Generally, 7.15.0 > 7.10.0 -- sounds like a problem with configure.

I upgraded curl to 7.16.1 and now I get:
# curl-config --vernum
071001
Now config runs without problems.
