dor a new radio.

Nobody's forcing you to "update" to 20.04, especially as there's nothing wrong
with the LTS version and 20.04 doesn't do what you need. Just revert back to

For an analogue radio the USB end is usually a generic USB/Serial converter
chip.
For DMR radios the USB chip is usually inside the radio with no electronics in
the cable.

I've never changed permissions on a tty port. Think that's a red herring.
Ports are assigned USB0, USB1 etc in the order they are plugged in. Doesn't
matter which socket it's connected to. If you are getting /dev/ttyUSB1 then you
already have something connected that is assigned to /dev/ttyUSB0.

You need to execute the following in a terminal
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chirp-daily
Then go to CONTROL Panel, SOFTWARE AND UPDATES and edit the CHIRP entry to
point to XENIAL.

It worked until Radio Reference changed something in it's database.
Radio Reference now wants you to have a paid account to download data.
Chirp doesn't cater for paid accounts.

The issue is that Ubuntu generates a new repository every 6 months with each
update. Most developers can't keep up with that and only keep up the LTS
repositories.

You can't just dump one image into multiple radios. Each radio needs to be
downloaded seperately and the image IMPORTED into that radio's config.

Easiest way is to either write them down and type them in or open 2 Chirp tabs,
one from each radio, and copy and paste between the tabs.

Because someone has to upload updates to all those repositories in several
different file formats.
Windows doesn't have repositories, you just re-install a recent copy.
Chirp doesn't HAVE to be installed into Linux fron a repository. It can just be
unzipped into a folder and run.

Download from the Baofeng and save the image file.
Download from the Kenwood, import the Baofeng image file, upload to Kenwood.

You need to set toToneto open repeaters. Forget the tone squelch, it's
unlikely you have multiple repeaters on one frequency in your area.
