*usually* just work in Linux. I have seen a few times where one of two
of the cables I have just seem to stop working but if I completely
unplug both sides of the cable, wait 10 seconds, and re-connect boths

Alright, after hours and hours of trying basically the same thing, I was
finally able to connect my radio to chirp. Thanks for all the help, it was your
suggestions that helped me search the internet further.
