Okay, looks like I was a bit hasty in my examination of log files. I discovered this line in the monitor log: 2013-09-27 23:54:25.089967 7fe04e454700 1 mon.chekov@1(peon).auth v15 unknown.0 10.42.6.159:0/2985411387 supports cephx but not signatures and 'cephx [service] require signatures = true';
