that will show you what the status of the drive is, if you then need to
make a filesystem : mkfs /dev/sda - make sure you dont have any dat

I've done similar in the past by setting up a minimal install in the new
server, use tar to copy over the old install and reboot. I was thinking
of rsync this time.

I can recommend Mondorescue (http://www.mondorescue.org)
It can backup to file, cd, network, disk etc...
I made numerous backups and restores with this very good (free) tool...

I have some general questions about setting up partitions. I have been
struggling to get an array to mount since I upgraded the drives and
exceeded a 2 gig partition so now the logical drive won't mount after
the install.

The controller is 8 channel SATA 300. That's not the problem. The
problem is getting the OS to mount a 4TB array after the initial
install of the OS. We had a 1.5 TB on there for a few years and never
had this problem with arrays under 2 TB.

in my case, i have an Intel Mobo with a 965 family chipset. I upgrade the BIOS and thats all, the problem is gone and everythin work so fine.
