OK I fixed the problem. CDE could not find it's libraries. So I
added /usr/dt/lib/
in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/cde.conf
run ldconfig
and CDE runs fine.
I checked again the LinuxBuild and the RH-Fedora notes for building
and installing CDE
and I do not see a

written in the wiki? I just checked again in the Fedora17 page
linked in the Linux Build page and does not say anything about
xinetd.

I have CDE 2.2.3 running successfully on Scientific Linux 7 which is equivalent
to CentOS 7. You must manually install and configure xinetd if you have not
done so already. Otherwise the desktop will not appear as you have described.

no errors at all would be quite unusual for CDE. It's normally quite
verbose about what it is doing.
Did you check your ${HOME}/.dt/startlog, ${HOME}/.dt/errorlog and
${HOME}/.dt/sessionlogs already?

Hello, is anyone running CDE on Centos/RHEL-7 ;
It compiled OK, individual programs start, but not the desktop. I
disabled SELinux
and stopped iptables and ip6tables. rpcbind runs with -i :
ps aux | grep rpc
gives
