Applications Manager provide
tterm still tries to log sessions via utmp, but utmp has been
deprecated in FreeBSD and Solaris since quite a while by utmpx. Linux
also uses utmpx, as far as I see (albeit with log files named after
the old utmp scheme).

no errors at all would be quite unusual for CDE. It's normally quite
verbose about what it is doing.
Did you check your ${HOME}/.dt/startlog, ${HOME}/.dt/errorlog and
${HOME}/.dt/sessionlogs already?
