FWIW, I use RHEL 5 = CentOS 5 and recently upgraded to 6.
Everything I use (not crystallographic software) works fine
except vmware workstation currently does not work on it,
so if you use vmware (I use it to run Windows inside Linux)
you have to wait a while.

I was sure I didn't want to learn Latex. I use it in Linux,
where you do one of those configure-make-install-from-source-

Disadvantages:
--It is not free.
--Not so great for text manipulation operations.
--Takes a while to learn, so not good for one quickie, but well
worth the time to learn it in the long run.
