Sorry, my previous message was sent prematurely...
As a workaround, I deleted $CCP4/lib/libfreetype* and $CCP4/lib/libz*.
This will force CCP4 to pick up the system versions of these libraries
and made it work on my machines (running Gentoo linux with
fontconfig-2.13.0, freetype-2.9.1 and zlib-1.2

I'm afraid it's the same problem in all desktop flavours, as fontconfig
is a standard library in modern Linux.
