I received a message today indicating that the Finger Lakes Land Trust
is recruiting volunteers for a hunting season patrol at the Park

Should have reported this earlier but on 10/23 at around 6:30pm I saw
a bird consistent with SHORT-EARED OWL on Townsendville Rd. near Fox
Rd. in Lodi, an area where they are seen in winter. It was late dusk
so I couldn't see coloration but it was the right size, lithe and
bulky. I think worth chec
Not exactly basin-related but here is an interesting new study on how
birders and non-birders organize knowledge about avian species:

I had a COMMON NIGHTHAWK cruise over me at tree-top elevation in a big
gust of wind around 10:30AM today. It was being harried by what I
think were red-wing blackbirds. This was on Willow Creek Rd. in
Ulysses.

This Snowy Owl continues in the same spot today. Didn't see the one on
Martin Rd. but it was raining pretty hard and tough to see. On Seybolt
Rd, there was also a male Northern Harrier.

At around 5:30 tonight there was a Great Horned Owl in a tree very
close to Rt. 89 south of Rt 139 in (I think) Ovid.
Also lots of goose movement today near Geneva, including ~50 Snow
Geese moving due West, and hundreds of Canada Geese moving North in
formation.

Unfortunately, no sign of the Snowy Owl this morning on the gas
installation at Reese/Seybolt Rd. at 7:15 (but I didn't look for very

There was a heavily streaked Snowy Owl on Rt. 96a at the height of
land northwest of Kime Rd. on top of a silo today at 4:30pm.
There were also several thousand Snow Geese in flight a few miles
south of the owl, around half in a group heading due east, and the
rest closer to Cayuga Lake in a group
I realize this is too late to be of much use to folks but there was a
Snowy Owl on the ground affording great views about 50 yards south of
Yale Farm Rd in Romulus yesterday (11/30) at around 3:30pm:

this area--it appeared to have
substantial dark coloration then, but it was too far away to tell with
my small binoculars today. I have heard through the grapevine that a
Snowy was seen in this area in past years as well, so perhaps this is
the bird's vacation spot, so to speak.

Snowy owl is again east of Rt. 96a, south of Woodworth Rd. near
Geneva. Bird is close to gas well, ~100 m from road, which would have
afforded excellent views if I hadn't forgotten my binoculars!

At the entrance to the Sampson Cemetery on Rt 96a, there was a MERLIN

At the HWS boathouse, there were 5 TRUMPETER SWANS along with lots of
